Youth Participation

Youth’s participation in Nepali politics can be categorized in 3 main categories: party youth wings, youths engaged in awareness generation and motivating youth participation (through NGOs) and those who are apathetic and detached from the complete electoral process. The refrain is believed to be caused by fragile youth policy, fragmentation in ideology, lack of fair opportunity for youths into bureaucracy and portraying youth wings as ultimate representation and incorporation of youth issues.

Nepali youth was seen to choose candidates thoughtfully in 2013 election. More than 40% of voters between 18 and 25 years old cast their votes. The youth involvement has played a vital role to elect the diligent leaders for the nation. Thousands of youths share similar view that they want peace, economic prosperity, and quality of life in Nepal. However, even though youth population is major population in Nepal, they do not realize that they are major voter population and have power in their majority to make political parties include youth policy in their agenda and to the government.

In 2013, a group of youth has formed a party named Bibekshil to change the dynamics of politics. However, they are not making any visible impact on politics. Compared to the number of young candidates, a number of winners in the elections are over 40, with number of young girls is very small.
